During my final appointment, the doctor told me that the hospital would call to schedule my induction the night before and then call again the morning of, in case things got too busy during the night and there were a lack of rooms. What really happened was they called me the night before and said "we'll call you in the morning as early as 5:00 AM to come in, however if we don't call you, you can call us after 9:00 and see where we are in the schedule." Becuase of that we decided to send Deja to Grandma's the night before, just in case they were going to call super early. Well one thing lead to another and John and I decided since Deja was going to Grandma's that night we were going to catch one more movie before the baby came, so we went to the 9:30 showing of Captain America: Civil War haha. Grandma doesn't know about this sshhh ;)
After we got home, sleeping was a rough probably because I was anticipating the phone call. I just kept waking up, checking the time, and checking my phone "just in case" they had called and I had missed it.
7:50-They finally called me to come in, which don't get me wrong, I was grateful it wasn't at 5:00 just because of my sleeping situation!! They asked how long it would take us to get to the hospital. I started telling them about 20 minutes, but John interrupted and said it would take at least half an hour. I was antsy and got ready as fast as possible like last time! We didn't actually arrive till about 8:45 haha.
9:00-Dr. Terry came and checked me (I was still dilated at 2 1/2) and broke my water (more painful than I anticipated, but nothing awful). As he left the room he said I could have my epidural at any time :) Well John and I started to settle in for the long hall because last time things evolved so slowly and I felt my first contractions around 9:45ish.
10:30-The Nurse came in to see how I was feeling and kept asking if I was ready for my epidural. I thought she was a little epi-happy, and asked if I could have fentanol because I wanted to wait as long as possible. She said that was fine and as she gave me the medicine it made me dizzier than last time. By now we had started watching Into the woods and I kept my eyes closed to feel less dizzy.
11:00-The medicine didn't stop the pain as much as I wanted, so I decided to ask
for the epidural. The anesthesiologist came in and was a pretty happy fellow, a lot more congenial than the guy who did my last one. After it was all put in, the nurse checked me and I was dilated to a
7! I couldn't believe it, haha. Talk about waiting for the last minute to get the epidural. If I had waited much longer, I probably would have missed my window of opportunity. She then immediately started prepping the room for the delivery and said we would probably have this baby within the next hour!
11:30-I
was having a lot of burning from the litocain used for the the epidural in my back. It was
even more painful than my current contractions, so the anesthesiologist came
back in and gave me a second dose, luckily it kicked in right before pushing
time and I literally couldn't feel a thing past my waist.
12:00-Dr. Terry came in and I started pushing. They could see the baby's hair and knew he was facing the right direction this time :) They had me push 3 times at the beginning of each contraction, have a
quick break, followed closely by a set of 4 pushes during the 2nd half
of the contraction. (John had to explain this to me after because I thought
each set of me pushing was a new contraction). It took about 4 contractions before he was out. Right before my final
contraction Dr. Terry pulled in one of his assistants to come push on my
belly in order to pop this little one out, which I was perfectly fine with ;)
12:23-Calvin
was born! 8 lbs, 5 oz, 21 inches, and BLONDE! John cut the cord, and then I did skin to skin for about
an hour, during which Calvin burped twice, haha. He must have had a good breakfast before entering the world ;) I was so shaky! It's crazy all the things I really truly
don't remember with Deja. John and I were in a little bit of shock having the labor go so quick. The nurse pointed that out and we agreed. I tried breast feeding throughout the day, but problem was he just didn't want to suck... Which was the opposite of
Deja. Luckily he's got the hang of it now ;) My legs stayed numb for
about 4 hours after the delivery, probably because of that second epidural
dosage.
Other fun/random things about my hospital stay included the fact the nurses seemed so anti-binky! I finally asked someone about it and they said they tried not to offer them to the baby too soon so that mom's wouldn't get offended, and also so that babies who were nursing wouldn't get nipple confusion. I thought that was interesting...mostly not wanting to offend the moms. This was the same with giving the babies bottles!! The on-call pediatrician was very cautious about telling us we may want to consider supplementing with formula till my milk came in, which was funny just because we supplemented a lot with Deja, and got the breast feeding thing down eventually, but we were perfectly fine making sure our baby got the food he needed ;) Because of this, I want to remember to bring my own bottle/formula next time because both Calvin and Deja needed them for different reasons during our hospital stay! On a positive note, the Breastfeeding Specialist was very impressed that I breastfed Deja for almost 18 months, haha.
One of the first things I ate after the delivery was a chocolate chip cookie dough shake from Iceberg courtesy of my parents, and a chicken bake from Costco courtesy of John's dad ;) Our parents and Deja were our first visitors, and Deja absolutely loved seeing the baby!!
Calvin got pretty yellow that second day, so Dr. Schmidt Junior told us we would need to start doing labs to see where his bilirubin was on a daily basis. It was pretty annoying having to go back to the hospital every morning and watch them prick my baby's foot to fill up vials of blood. Luckily after day 4 they cleared him to be at a good enough level to not go under the lights and to not have to come back for more blood work, which I was so very grateful for!!!
After checking out of the hospital, we went to pick up Deja. I had told John that maybe I should go in first without the baby and make sure to open my arms wide and give Deja a great big hug to show her that she hadn't been replaced. Well, I walked in, did this at exactly her level and said "Deja it's so good to see you!" her reply was "Where's the baby? I want to see the baby..." Glad I was so cautious ;)
We are so excited to get to know this kiddo of ours!
